Greater Anglia



Countries Served:

Greater Anglia is a new rail operator, providing services in London and the East of England. The company took over operations on lines previously run by National Express East Anglia. Greater Anglia is owned by the Dutch rail operator NS.

Greater Anglia run a number of services, primarily to/from London Liverpool Street. Destinations include Stansted Airport (Stansted Express), Southend, Harwich International, Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Bury St Edmunds, King's Lynn and Norwich.


Most Greater Anglia services offer both Standard and First Class accommodation. InterCity services between Norwich and London offer a Quiet Zone for passengers wishing to travel without too much noise. These carriages restrict mobile phone usage, and discourage audible electronic devices.

First Class passengers can enjoy more spacious seating, with reclining chairs with their own tables and enhanced legroom. InterCity services will shortly be offering First Class passengers a complimentary refreshment service as part of the ticket price.

Luggage & Facilities

There are no restrictions placed on the amount of luggage each passenger may travel with. Luggage arrangements on-board vary between trains, but generally space is available on racks above seats.

Disabled Passengers

Priority seating is available on Greater Anglia trains. These seats are designed to be used by people less able to stand. While anyone can sit in a Priority Seat, they should be vacated at the request of those with disabilities, pregnant women, the elderly, or those travelling with young children.

Expectant Mothers

In addition to the Priority Seating arrangements, expectant mothers in their last eight weeks of pregnancy may receive a free First Class upgrade if there are no seats available in Standard Class. In order to receive this benefit, passengers should either have a season ticket Photocard, or obtain one from a ticket office. Write to Greater Anglia with your Photocard number, journey details and a letter from your employer confirming your last date before maternity leave, or a similar letter from your GP. Greater Anglia will write back confirming the arrangement, and this letter should be presented to any ticket inspector, along with your photocard if you choose to sit in First Class.

Food & Drink

A buffet car is available on InterCity services between Norwich and London, serving a selection of sandwiches, hot and cold snacks, confectionary and hot and cold drinks.

WiFi / Internet

On some services, passengers may take advantage of wirless internet access. This service is available on InterCity routes between Norwich, Ipswich and London. WiFi access is free for First Class passengers, and Standard Class passengers may purchase access for £2.95 per trip, or £19 per month from their web browsers' login screen.


Passengers may transport bicycles free of charge on Greater Anglia routes, although some restrictions are in place. The carriage of bicycles is not permitted on the following services, Monday-Friday (exc. Bank Holidays:

  • Services south of Broxbourne due to arrive at Stratford or London Liverpool Street between 07.45 and 09.45 (except reserved bicycle spaces on InterCity services);
  • Services leaving Stratford or London Liverpool Street between 16.30 and 18.30 (except reserved spaces on InterCity services, and services north of Broxbourne); and
  • Services departing Audley End or Ely towards Cambridge between 07.45 and 08.45.

On InterCity services between London and Norwich, bicycles may be transported, but space must be reserved in advance. Bicycles are stored in the Guard's van, which is locked three minutes before departure from London and Norwich. Reservations can be made by contacting Greater Anglia (0845 600 7245). Reservations should be made at least 24hrs in advance, and spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Only folded bicycles may be transported on the Stansted Express. Bicycles should be stored in a protective carry case/bag. Reservations are not required.

Travelling with Pets

Passengers may travel with up to two dogs, cats or small domestic animals, as long as they do not occupy a seat. For greater numbers of animals, a supplement is payable, equivalent to have the adult fare for the journey, up to a maximum of £5 single, £10 return.
