The Smyril Line ferry service operating between Denmark and the Faroe Islands and Iceland operates between April and October, although the start/end destination varies depending on time of the year.
This page deals with the Hirtshals / Esbjerg - Seydisfiordur service via Tórshavn (Faroe Islands). Full details of this rather complicated timetabling/routing system can be found on the Smyril Line website here.
The journey is made onboard the Norrona, a part cargo part passenger ship, which is able to carry up to 1482 passengers, 800 cars and 3250 tonnes of cargo. The ship contains a variety of things to entertain passengers, including restaurants, bars, shopping, a cinema, playground and a small swimming pool.
Smyrill Line Ferry Accommodation
When booking your journey, you have a choice of cabins, with the cheapest option being a 4 berth cabin, and the most expensive being deluxe cabins and the private suite.
The cabins are similar to railway sleeper cabins in that by day the beds convert into sofas/seating, and at night they fold away to create beds. All passengers receive towels and linen, and each cabin has its own bath and toilet facilities. Each cabin has a power point as well as hairdryer and television. If you are travelling alone, or on a budget, you can book a berth in a 4-berth shared cabin. Shared cabins are single-sex. Cabins suitable for disabled people are available on request.
The deluxe cabins feature all the same benefits of the two, three and four berth cabins, but are larger and contain a double bed as well as a sofa and telephone. If you are really looking to 'push the boat out' (sorry for the pun!), you can opt for the suite, which has a separate bedroom, living room, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.
If you would like to find out more about the boat, or the journey, try reading the online brochure.
Seyðisfjörður is a 7 or 8 hour drive from Reykjavík by car, or 8 or 9 hours by bus. It is possible to catch public transport from the ferry terminal to the city, but this involves a one-night stopover in Akureyri. More information on these public transport options can be found at www.dice.is or www.bsi.is.
