Hook of Holland - Amsterdam (Train)

Rail

The Journey

This route is particularly popular with people wishing to travel to/from ferries at Hook of Holland. It is part of the DutchFlyer service which links the United Kingdom to the Netherlands.

The journey is either made onboard NS InterCity trains or NS Sprinter services, depending on the exact journey, and where you change trains. Trains between Amsterdam and Rotterdam / Schiedam are generally InterCity, whilst Rotterdam / Schiedam to Hook of Holland are generally Sprinter trains.

Dutch Railways (NS)

Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) is the main passenger rail operator in the Netherlands, serving over 1m passengers per day.

The company's routes cover most of the country, with routes generally operating at a frequency of at least two trains per hour. In addition to numerous daytime services, the company also operates overnight service. NS is a partner in the DutchFlyer scheme (connecting the United Kingdom and Netherlands by train and boat), and the NS Hispeed link between the Netherlands and France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.

Tickets for NS services can be bought online through the Dutch Railways website, third party websites, and at ticket machines at NS stations.

NS operates two principal types of passenger train, Sprinter (local services) and InterCity.

Sprinter services are designed for short journeys, and are therefore a little less comfortable than InterCity alternatives. Ideal for commuter routes, these trains are clearly recognisable. NS is steadily investing in newer Sprinter trains to upgrade their fleet.

InterCity services are for medium and longer distance services. All InterCity services have on-board toilets, and quiet zones for people wishing to travel more peacefully.

All NS trains offer both first and second class accommodation (indicated on both the interior and exterior decoration).

Food and Drink

Domestic services no longer provide the opportunity for passengers to purchase refreshments, as a result of the large number of convenience kiosks at stations. Longer journeys do offer a limited refreshment service, RailTender.

Bicycles

Bicycles may be transported on NS services.

WiFi / Internet

A limited number of InterCity trains now offer free WiFi, thanks to a collaboration between NS and T-Mobile. Internet-enabled trains have a WiFi symbol on their exteriors. To use the service, just select the network named 'T-Mobile'. The service is planned to remain free of charge until 2013, when a wider roll-out of the service is scheduled.

Toilets

All InterCity trains have toilets onboard. Facilities are cleaned regularly.
