La Spezia is one of the provinces of Liguria, and a beautiful city in its own right. The city is a good base to explore the Ligurian coast, including the Cinque Terre as it is only an 8 minute train journey from the first of the five towns, Riomaggiore. The town is worth exploring in its own right, with a beach and plenty to do.
Trains to/from Genoa and Pisa run frequently to La Spezia. There are also regional train services available to the Cinque Terre.
