Vienna
Vienna is the capital city of Austria, and is the cultural, political and economic centre of the country. The centre of the city is a UNESCO world heritage site, with a host of museums and other attractions to entertain visitors. The Museumsquartier hosts a variety of cultural institutions, whilst also being a pleasant place to pass time. The Schloss Schonbrunn is a fantastic palace, comparable to Versailles, with spectacular gardens and a zoo.
There is just so much to see and do in the city, visitors should take a look at a city guide before-hand to pick out some of the must-see attractions.
Vienna (also known as Wien) is very well connected by international train. The city is served by overnight services as well as a host of high-speed international services from countries including Germany, Hungary, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Sometimes, when looking to make an international journey, it can be cheaper to buy two national tickets rather than one international one (so a ticket to the border, and from the other side of the border onwards to your destination).
There are also a range of international bus services arriving at the city, with Vienna International Busterminal (VIB) the station to aim for.
Once inside the city, you will be well catered for by the public transport network. Services by rail, underground, tram and bus are available, with the underground system being particularly effective and useful. As with most major cities, travelcard options are available to save you money if you plan on using the public transport system a few times.
