Travelling by train in India can be a fantastic experience. It is however, likely to be delayed, and you should make sure that you turn up a good 20 minutes before your train is due to set off. If you are planning a journey with multiple connections, make sure you build in enough time to catch the connecting service to avoid being stranded for lengthy periods of time (even if this does add to the travel experience!).
If you are booking an Indian rail journey, try to book your seat in advance through sites like Cleartrip, or directly through Indian Railways, as quite often Indian train journeys can be fully booked in advance. If you do decide to try and book in person at the station, make sure you are buying from the official ticket office, rather than opportunistic ticket touts! Indian hotels may also be able to book your train tickets for you, although they may try to charge you for this service.
