Why Overland?

So you've chosen to travel overland? Or maybe just thinking about your options? Either way, we would like to think that you have come to the right place. If you are still undecided about the benefits of avoiding air travel, this page will hopefully answer some of your questions...
People visiting this site tend to fall into one of three categories...those that are scared of flying, those concerned about their 'green' credentials, or those who want to make the most out of their time travelling.
We don't really want to overdo the whole eco-friendly side of overland travel, it is well documented across the web. Companies like Eurostar have calculated that trains can release around 10 times less Carbon Dioxide than planes on similar routes. Whilst this figure is only rough, and varies depending on the route travelled, machines used etc, it still gives you a good idea of the benefits of rail travel.
For those who are scared of flying, going overland is a sensible option. Its not great to avoid your fears though, so I would suggest you try to overcome them rather than avoid them. You could try hypnosis...or a fear of flying course. If you've tried those before to no avail, or just don't really want to...then go overland!
In our opinion, one of the major advantages of travelling overland are the extra experiences gained by seeing and actually living the areas you travel through. Of course, that gain can't really be measured, but take a look at our travellers' tales if you want some examples! One argument against travelling overland is that it takes longer than flying - which is true, to an extent (think about the extra time spent travelling to an airport, going through security checks etc). That extra time spent 'on the road' gives you more time to meet people, see the sights, see more sights (all the places you travel through on the way to your destination) and generally to enjoy yourself!
Anyway...this is just an introduction to the benefits of travelling overland. Search around this site and the rest of the internet for more information. We hope that you take the time to look around our site, see what your options are - the alternatives to taking a plane - if you like what you see, why not leave us a message on our Guestbook, or get in touch!
